What Gaddafi in Libya Said About Viruses and Vaccines in 2009

Former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi officially addressed the United Nations in 2009 at the 64th General Assembly in New York.

Gaddafi broke protocol by extending his speech from 15 minutes to 90 minutes.

The then President of the African Union – wore traditional brown Libyan attire with a black African continent pin pinned to his chest – he was billed as “the leader of the Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya revolution, President of the African Union and King of African Kings.

His speech touched on a myriad of issues, including the plea for a permanent seat for Africa on the United Nations Security Council.

But part of his speech that had some relevance in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic was his statements about the vaccine.

“We are approaching the phenomena of piracy and terrorism in the wrong way. Today there is the swine flu. Maybe tomorrow there will be the fish flu, because sometimes we produce viruses by controlling them. It is a commercial enterprise. Capitalist companies produce viruses in order to be able to generate and sell vaccines.

“It is a very shameful and deplorable ethic. Vaccines and drugs should not be sold. In The Green Book, I maintain that drugs should not be sold or marketed.

“Medicines should be free and vaccines given free to children, but capitalist companies produce viruses and vaccines and want to make a profit. Why aren’t they free? We must give them away for free, not sell them.

“The whole world should strive to protect our people, create and manufacture vaccines and give them free to children and women, and not take advantage of them. All these points are on the agenda of the General Assembly, which only has to exercise this duty, ”he stressed.
