Kia e-Niro was named what car? Car of the year 2019, becoming the first electric car to win this award.
Which car? Editor-in-chief Steve Huntingford said the e-Niro stood out because "it addresses the key cost and scope issues that traditionally prevent many motorists from getting into the ownership of electric vehicles." He added that it was a "spacious and practical family SUV, with little compromise."
Kia UK director Paul Philpott commented: "This marks an important milestone in the awards ceremony as we approach the critical point where every driver will seriously consider buying an electric car like next car. "
The Volvo XC40, last year's winner, was voted the Family SUV of the year for the second year in a row, while the Skoda Octavia reclaimed the family car award.
There were three new categories this year: Rechargeable Hybrid, Sport SUV and Pickup, won respectively by the Volvo XC90 T8, Cupra Ateca and Volkswagen Amarok.
The sports car and performance clbad was split for 2019. The sports car award was awarded to the Alpine A110, also a five-star coach car, and to the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio , named Performance Car of the Year.
The Reader Reader, which has been voted by the public, marks the next car that readers are eager to see this year. This honor has been awarded to the Honda Urban EV, which will be showcased at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
