James Oppong Boanuh Interim IGP, James Oppong-Boanuh

James Oppong-Boanuh, Inspector General of the Interim Police (IGP), has detained Lakeside District Commander, DSP Eric Partey Opata, for the illegal detention of a suspect.

DSP Opata, according to a police statement, kept the suspect in custody for nine days without due process.

"In his absence, the police commander of Adenta Division, DSP / Mr Cephas Coffie was instructed to supervise the order until further notice," the statement said on his website.

Mr. Oppong-Boanuh was recently appointed interim IGP after President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo asked David Asante-Apeatu to go on leave with immediate effect.

The interim IGP's decision regarding the lakefront commander, a rare occurrence, is seen as a sign that he intends to reinforce discipline in the police service.

The police have been repeatedly accused of abuse of power and unprofessional conduct.
