According to sources, samples were collected in gutters in Karachi between April 5 and May 16.
WHO has taken samples from 11 localities in the city to examine the polio virus situation.
Samples were collected from sampling sites at Hijrat Colony, Machhar Colony, Khameso Goth, Rashid Minhas Road, Korangi, Bakhtawar Landhi Village, Haji Mureed Goth, Sohrab Goth, from the Mohammad Khan colony, Orangi Nallah, the Orangi colony and the IPDC colony.
Samples from all areas confirmed the presence of polio virus in wastewater, sources added.
A six-month-old was recently tested positive for the polio virus, bringing to two the total number of reported cases of disabling disease in Karachi this year. This is the third case in Sindh Province and the 17th case in the country this year.
The extensive environmental monitoring put in place by the polio eradication program in Pakistan in the previous months has detected the polio virus in the wastewater of twelve cities.
According to a result shared by the National Center for Emergency Operations (NEOC), the presence of the virus was confirmed in samples of sewage collected in March 2019 in the cities of Peshawar, Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi. , Mardan, Bannu, Waziristan, Hyderabad, Kambar and Sukkour.
