The University of Cambridge has officially recognized the "gaokao", the annual Chinese college entrance exam, as "adequate preparation" for its undergraduate courses, along with standardized tests from the UK, published on Monday's Weibo page. .
The prestigious British university claims to have accepted gaokao for years – although a written notice was recently included in the school's enrollment criteria in 2019, according to which candidates submitting scores to the gaokao would preferably be among the 0.1% of the best candidates in their province. year.
In addition to gaokao, candidates may also submit other test results and send additional material, such as rewards, when applying to Cambridge. In China, it is often the examination alone that will determine in which universities a student can go.
Chen Zhiwen, editor of the education information portal China Education Online, believes that the acceptance of gaokao by Cambridge confers credibility to the ability of the test to demonstrate the aptitude of a candidate. It does not make Chinese students' access to Cambridge easier, Chen adds, because the scores are only one point of reference among others for the candidates.
The gaokao has faced many critics in China, who often blame the gaokao system for lacking flexibility and promoting only a specific type of student.
