Your new MacBook Pro may be more Apple than originally thought. Although Intel was awarded the Thunderbolt brand on Apple laptops in early 2011, it now seems that Apple may have beaten them and that they have embarked on their own application mark one year in advance. Is it cricket?
The mark was filed in Jamaica, according to news reports on Thursday. The name was badigned to Intel, although the chip maker did not claim to own the trademark. Originally named Light Peak, Thunderbolt technology allows data transfer rates of up to 10 Gbps.
For now, Apple is the only computer manufacturer to sell Thunderbolt products. Sony has considered using it, but yesterday decided to try to fragment Thunderbolt instead, while HP opted for USB 3.0 for its desktop computers.
If the mark is valid, Apple may be the only user named Thunderbolt. This could explain why Apple's competitors are so slow to adopt the standard without changes and could foreshadow a difficult future for Thunderbolt in terms of acceptance.
