In this edition of The Gillmor Gang, Brent Leary shows off his new wireless adapter for his live streaming studio. The result is a captivating view from his console as he toggles between close-ups and the inflow of the rest of the Gang, all captured in a large-screen cinematic view. The underlying message is that real-time live video production has become accessible to virtually anyone as streaming becomes ubiquitous at the so-called citizen level.
Trailblazers like Brent and his criminal partner at CRMPlayaz, Paul Greenberg, have been at the forefront of technology; now we are seeing something similar to what is happening in the designer boom. Newsletters are increasingly featured on major social platforms, as are live audio streaming at the Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces. This week, Salesforce announced its Salesforce + streaming network and celebrated the completion of the Slack acquisition with several new enterprise releases on live audio (Huddles) and business-to-business collaboration through Slack Connect.
Continue with the first wave of work from anywhere back to school and office, streaming as a service may be a key feature of the ongoing hybrid approach to tackling the pandemic. The political struggle with vaccinations and masking seems doomed to the long term. The reaction from the tech community should be a more promising sign of progress. Professionally, Disney and Scarlet Johannsen exchange threats of lawsuit as month-long contracts are torn apart. Newsletter offers pursue a shrinking population of bestselling authors as The New York Times places most of its star-led posts behind the pay wall. The more things change, the more familiar they seem.
Even the Gang newsletter has a link to Om Malik’s post on Nam June Paik, the pioneer of experimental video. I was his technical assistant at the California Institute of the Arts and I “borrowed” his partner Abe’s 3 black and white Sony portapacks to film a writing session at the Firesign Theater. Civilization ho.
