"The film had a slightly romanticized vision of what had happened. It's reasonably right but the real story is so much more interesting. It's a story of politics, ingenuity and danger, but also trying to make a weapon to destroy those roadblocks and cost a lot of money.
"You see some of that in the original movie but there are many more that have happened and it's a story as interesting as the raid itself."
Jackson bought the rights to James Holland's bestseller, Dam Busters: The Dam Dam Race, which includes declbadified information not available in the 1950s.
Holland is credited as a historical consultant on the project. He said, "All of today's science was kept secret in the fifties. What they were throwing in reality was a deep charge, not a bouncing bomb.

The representation of Wing Commander Guy Gibson, the hero who led the mission, was "innocuous," Holland said.
The fight against Gibson is not described in the film, Holland said, because "in the 1950s, you did not talk about combat fatigue."
