For patients who live with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), there are many lifestyle changes they need to make for their health. Among them, you have to eat well, change your diet and exercise. Dr Suresh Shankar, nephrologist and vice president of clinical affairs at NephroPlus, says many patients with CRF are less physically active and have reduced function and physical performance, compared to those who do not.
“Extensive research, however, suggests that exercise interventions have the potential to improve several health parameters and outcomes in patients with CRF,” he says, adding that an inactive lifestyle could be a factor. “In the past, it was understood that vigorous physical activity is additionally harmful for people with CRF, but it is probably because of these beliefs that these patients show a rarity of participation in physical activity. Patients with CRF should follow an exercise program designed to intensify the benefits and minimize the risks, ”says Dr Shankar.
According to him, research over the past decades has shown countless health benefits of regular exercise in patients with CRF. Some of the main benefits include:
* Improved physical condition and muscle strength.
* Prevention of muscle wasting.
* Improved cardiovascular health.
* Improved nutritional parameters.
* Reduction of chronic inflammation.
“Exercise also improves quality of life and has also shown psychological benefits such as decreased anxiety, stress and depression in patients with CRF.”
Things to keep in mind
Dr Shankar warns patients with CRF should keep their physical activity limits in mind and stop exercising after they feel “tired, struggling to catch their breath, sick or dizzy” .
“Other danger signals include pain, muscle cramps or a fast heartbeat. Additionally, exercise therapy should be stopped if the patient has a fever, experiences worsening symptoms, or has any other health problem that worsens with exercise, ”he says.
These patients should be encouraged to participate in regular physical activity, including various styles of physical training:
– Aerobic training such as walking, swimming or cycling.
– Strength training
– Resistance training
– Flexibility training
