Meru County will host the celebrations of World Cancer Day today with mbad screening in the city of Meru.

According to Dr. Joshua Kibera, an anatomic pathologist at GracePark Hospital in Meru City, nearly 40 test requests to her Meru pathology lab and neighboring counties are positive for cancer each month.

"I treat about 20% of all pathology tests in the region, with other samples being sent to Nairobi hospitals." I suspect there are about 1,500 new cases of cancer each year.

"The fact that we are seeing an increase in the number of children and young women with cancer is alarming. The disease must be taken seriously," Dr. Kibera said during an interview in his office. .

At the Cottolengo mission hospital in Chaaria, 545 patients were diagnosed with cancer in 2018.

The medical director, Dr. Giuseppe Gaido, describes cancer as an epidemic with many victims in Meru and northern Kenya.

"I started noticing an increase in the number of cancer patients in this facility in 2009, and the number of cases has increased. It is very worrisome that more young people are diagnosed with cancer. We have seen women as young as 31 be diagnosed with cervical cancer, "said Dr. Gaido.

The Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital, which now has an operational oncology clinic, registered 699 cancer patients for chemotherapy last year.

Meru Medical Services Director Lilian Karoki said 52 cancer patients were actively taking chemotherapy in the facility.
