George Martorano served 32 years in prison for weed – and then opened a CBD café in Philadelphia upon his release.

George Martorano was arrested in Philadelphia in 1982 after being caught by the FBI with a truckload of cannabis, which, according to Martorano, accounted for 2,700 pounds of bud. On the advice of his lawyer, Martorano pleaded guilty to a litany of drug charges, thinking that he would only get 10 years in prison. But the judge sentenced him to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

During his 32 years in prison, cannabis and its legality have changed a lot in the United States.

Finally, after 32 appeals in as many years, Martorano was released at the age of 65 as part of the DOJ's parole program. He has now opened the Hip Hemp Cafe, a coffee shop and a CBD shop in downtown Philadelphia.

Released from prison in 2015 after 32 years, Martorano said that he had no idea what the CBD is. But he said he learned by talking to mothers who treated their children with CBD.
