The murders of children in Atlanta were at the center of the concerns Hunter of spiritsecond season, and it seems that there has been a renewed interest in the case. Earlier this year, a three-hour documentary titled The murders of children in Atlanta created on Investigation Discovery. Shortly before the release of the documentary, the mayor of Atlanta, Keisha Lance Bottoms, announced the reopening of the file and thanked the creator of the documentary, Will Packer, during his press conference.

However, it is believed that the author of the murders is Wayne Williams – who is currently in jail – prompting fans to wonder why the tragic case was reopened.

Why was the Atlanta Child Murders case reopened?

The murders of children in Atlanta are a series of murders committed from 1979 to 1981. Although there were a few adults killed at that time, the majority of the 28 or more victims were between 7 and 17 years old.

Mayor Lance Bottoms wants to test the evidence again with the new technology created since then, and some evidence has never been tested.

However, some of the cases of child murders have always had the status of "unsolved". Five of the murders were committed in DeKalb County and in May 2005, DeKalb County Police Chief Louis Graham reopened these cases. He resigned from his position a year later and the files were closed again. Graham had already expressed doubts about Williams' responsibility in the murders.

Did Wayne Williams commit the child murders in Atlanta?

While Williams is supposed to be the killer behind the child murders, there is also a shadow of doubt around his conviction. Williams was in fact found guilty of killing two adults and, only after this trial, was found responsible for 20 to 22 other deaths. So, technically, no one has ever been tried for the murders of children, and there are still a number of murders that are not officially attributed to Williams.

During Williams' trial in 1981, witnesses testified that he saw Williams with the victims and that the fibers in his carpet matched the fibers found on two of the victims. However, much of the evidence linking Williams to many victims is circumstantial. We saw him near the bridge where the body of Nathaniel Cater, 27 years old, was found later, but nothing concretely indicates that he dropped the body of Cater in l & # 39; water.

In addition, in 2007, Williams' dog's hairs were tested against dog hair found on some of the victims. The results showed that the hairs contained the same DNA sequence as the Williams dog … but that this DNA sequence also corresponds to about 1 dog out of 100.

Former FBI profiler John E. Douglas wrote the book Hunter of spirit is based on, and he also expressed doubts that Williams was the only killer. Williams has always maintained his innocence and issued a statement when Mayor Lance Bottoms announced the reopening of the case.

However, the new investigation into the case is not intended to exonerate Williams. Mayor Lance Bottoms said she believed that much of the previous evidence linked Williams to many murdered children, and the reopening is more concerned with the search for another suspect.
