Liverpool will not participate in the FIFA Club World Cup, even if they win the Champions League final.
Historically, the winners of the Champions League would automatically receive an invitation to the Club World Cup.
However, this year's World Club Cup has been moved. The next edition should not be before 2021.
This is part of the new FIFA projects that were approved in March to organize an expanded version of the contest every four years.
The new format will face 24 teams – instead of eight in the previous model – in which Liverpool would have been invited to participate.
However, Liverpool and members of the European Club Association (ECA) opposed the proposals presented by the FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, and refused to participate in the contest.
The BBC announced in a letter to FIFA by ECA: "We are strongly opposed to any approval of a revised CWC – no ECA club would participate".
FIFA moved the Club World Cup from its usual location in December to the summer months of June to July.
It will resume the previously reserved time slot in the football schedule for the Confederations Cup – which has been removed.
This could cause problems for the leading European clubs that are involved, as this would mean that there would be little time for a break before the start of the pre-season.
Infantino said before the new format: "The world will now see a real Club World Cup where fans will see the best teams in the world compete to be crowned world champions.
"We hope that all the best teams will participate and we have had very positive discussions with UEFA.
"But it was incumbent upon us to make a decision because we had to deal with organizational matters, and we only have two years left."
Liverpool could potentially lose up to £ 100 million if it decided not to participate in the competition, with each participating club having to pay a substantial playing fee.
The other invited clubs will be the winners and finalists of the UEFA Champions League and Europa League for this campaign and the next three seasons.
The Reds have not yet won the competition in their illustrious history, having lost in the final on both occasions in 1981 and 2005.
