President of the European Commission, Jean Adukwei Mensa
The Electoral Commission said its decision to create a new voters' register for the 2020 elections was due to the fact that its current software is out of date.
In an interview with Radio Ghana in Kumasi, the EC's Chief Electoral Officer, Serebour Quaicoo, said that the current machines used by the EC were obsolete and that the producers were no longer producing parts for them.
"The machines we use now are obsolete, the producers do not produce any more, so we ask parts to maintain them. [such as] cartridges, toners is a problem. "
"The Commission has therefore taken a decision, but we have not yet made it public, but we intend to build a new register for 2020," Quaicoo said.
He emphasized that several factors, including the need to replace old-fashioned bio-metric validation machines, made it necessary to create a new register of voters.
Explaining, he said the current machines would be used for district level elections, after which "we will create a new register".
