Second in the line of British succession, all eyes are on Prince William who is getting closer and closer to the throne. But will Prince William become king one day? In the future, we look at everything that needs to happen for Prince William to become king.
Will Prince William become king?
Believe it or not, becoming a king is not as simple as it seems. For Prince William to ascend the throne, two members of his family, including his father, must first die. Not to mention: there is a lot of training needed. Here are all the things that Prince William will have to do before becoming King of England, as well as other important things that must happen.
The death of Queen Elizabeth
As a long-time monarch, Prince Charles and Prince William had the privilege of not only preparing for their future roles as monarchs, but also learning from His Majesty. However, to get closer to the British throne, the grandmother of Prince William, Queen Elizabeth II must die or abdicate the throne (which the royals claim never to do).
Once Queen Elizabeth pbaded, Prince Charles will become King of England, making Prince William the new heir to the throne.
Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall
Because of his unique role in the royal family, Prince William will experience many title changes before ascending the throne. When Prince Charles becomes King, he will probably pbad his present titles, Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall, to his son.
With the exception of the monarch, these two titles are the highest ranked titles of the royal family and are reserved for the eldest son and heir to the British throne.
Royal training
It is no secret that Prince William has intensified it in his royal career. The Duke of Cambridge now serves as knight for Queen Elizabeth II and has helped organize state dinners, among other important royal duties. He even moved his family to Kensington Palace full time to get closer to the Crown's headquarters and devote more time to the family business.
In addition, Queen Elizabeth II has probably invested time in preparing her grandson for the role of heir and possibly king. He also probably spends a lot of time learning about his future roles and responsibilities as Prince of Wales and Duke of Cambridge through his father, Prince Charles.
After the death of his grandmother, Prince William will probably continue his training and learn by watching his father take the throne and become king of England.
He will inherit the Duchy of Cornwall
Once Prince Charles is King, Prince William will no longer rely on him to make money. Instead, he will inherit the Duchy of Cornwall, a portfolio of land and income-generating properties for the Duke of Cornwall and the Prince of Wales (and his family). The Duchy of Cornwall covers the cost of living, traveling and other royal expenses.
He could leave Kensington Palace
When Prince Charles reaches the throne, he will probably go to Buckingham Palace. And, with a vacancy at Clarence House (Prince Charles' current residence), Prince William and Kate Middleton could move their family, office and staff to a new place of residence.
The death of Prince Charles
For Prince William to ascend the throne, Prince Charles should also die. At the time of his father's death, Prince William will automatically become King of England.
