Russian archaeologists from the Egyptian Studies Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, with the support of JSC Rosoboronexport, a unit of the Rostec State Corporation, have made a unique discovery. During excavation work on the site of an ancient necropolis in Egypt, they discovered a burial chamber dating back a few thousand years.
For more than seven years, specialists have excavated an ancient necropolis near Deir al-Banat, a Coptic monastery. The necropolis is located in the Fayum oasis, on the shores of Lake Moeris (or Lake Qarun). In a well, scientists discovered a unique coffin containing elements of ancient Egyptian and Roman funerary rites. The mummy rested on a mattress and a pillow, both richly decorated with tapestry inserts. She was dressed in several tunics and covered with a beautifully embroidered blanket. A few millennia later, the body is in good condition.
The deceased's head was placed in a very tall and narrow quadrilateral, more than 0.5 meters high. The effect of a high head above the body was obtained thanks to a special structure made of date palm stems carefully wrapped in funerary fabrics. The feet were wrapped in handkerchiefs to form a small, clean rectangle. The ribbons arranged in a certain way imitated the motif that the ancient Egyptians used to fix cartonnages on their mummies. It turned out that the tomb contained the remains of a well-to-do middle-aged man.
"Since 2003, the Egyptian Studies Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences is studying the vast necropolis that extends over the hills on the shores of Lake Moeris. During the course of the studies, more than 400 tombs were discovered over an area of approximately 1,400 square meters. Their badysis is essential to understand the lifestyles and culture of the people who inhabited this oasis during the period from the reign of the Ptolemaic dynasty to the early Middle Ages, "said Galina Belova, Head of the Scientific Division, Center Studies Egyptology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Other studies on the mummy will help clarify the time of his burial. Presumably, this happened in the Roman era in Egyptian history. Other mysteries of life and the burial of the mummy could also be revealed.
In the past, Egyptian archaeologists began to explore the region. Their work is now being pursued by their Russian counterparts. The Russian archaeological mission is carrying out excavations in several parts of Egypt: in Memphis, the ancient capital of the country, in Alexandria, located along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, and in the south, in the suburbs of Luxor. Rosoboronexport supports Russian scientists.
"Supporting culture and preserving historical memory are important vectors of social activities for Rostec and Rosoboronexport. The archaeological project is an important part of Egyptian cultural life and Russia's contribution to the study of World Heritage. It promotes a relationship of trust between our two countries and positively influences the partnership in various areas of Russian-Egyptian cooperation, "said Alexander Mikheev, Managing Director of Rosoboronexport.
Every year, as part of the social policy of the Rostec State company, the company sponsors numerous projects and events in the fields of culture, sport and education, in Russia and in Russia. # 39; abroad.
"Rosoboronexport is a member of today's business community, and the development of this community is inconceivable without pursuing a social mission. The company adheres to the concept of social responsibility in its activities, "Alexander Mikheev added.
