Johnson & Johnson is expected to pay 29 million US dollars (about 42 million New Zealand dollars) to a woman who claims that her baby powder has given her terminal cancer, an American jury said.
A jury of the Superior Court in Oakland, California, said Thursday (New Zealand time) that the world's largest health care company was primarily responsible for Teresa Leavitt's mesothelioma.
The verdict stated that baby powder was an "important contributing factor" in his illness.

Johnson & Johnson faces approximately 13,000 lawsuits in the United States.
His lawsuit is one of the many cases that link cancer to asbestos in Johnson & Johnson's talc-based products and argues that society has been hiding the health risk for decades.

Requests for comment from the New Jersey-based company were not immediately satisfied.
Johnson & Johnson faces some 13,000 similar lawsuits across the country.
The company insisted that its talc products were clearly safe, but lost a series of lawsuits.
Last year, a Los Angeles jury awarded $ 25.7 million to a woman who was diagnosed with cancer powder.
Last year, a Missouri jury awarded $ 4.69 million to 22 women.
The Johnson & Johnson stock price fell nearly 2% after working hours on Wednesday before rising to $ 139.41.
