The Matildas have always been animated by an American mentality against the world.

In the '80s and' 90s, they paid for their own flights, washed their own training equipment and played without being watched.

Over the last two decades, as they improved their world rankings, they fought for fair conditions and to pay.

And last week, club critics intensified after their 2-1 defeat against Italy.

"We have not read (the critics) but at the end of the day you can feel it," she said.

"Social media provides people with a platform to say what they want, so it was good to send a message home and send a message to the rest of the world.

"We knew it would happen.

"We knew people would judge fast, but that's football and look at what we did today, we had three different scorers and we outperformed them most of the time.

"Go back after two goals with the pressure we had on us, it's pretty special."

The Matildas sent a message to their detractors, but did they also send it to the rest of the tournament?

"Damn yeah," Kerr continued.

"Well, we must first focus on Jamaica, we can not go too far.

"Brazil is one of the best teams in the world, it probably has the best player in the history of the game. [in Marta].

"So, if people do not look at the Australians, we will pick you up as we did then.

"People do not understand the belief that we have in this team, they do not understand the trust we have in each other, the trust we have in Ante [coach Ante Milicic].

"A match was not going to derail our hopes in World Cup – and that's why it was so frustrating for us because instead of the media telling us" we can turn things around, "it's became negative for us and it only fed us, so thank you. "
