Work diligently to safeguard the cocoa industry: COCOBOD boss urges stakeholders

Ghana COCOBOD Managing Director, Mr. Joseph Aidoo, tasked stakeholders to lead the campaign for afforestation, good agricultural practices and compliance with COVID-19 protocols to protect the cocoa industry.

Addressing attendees at a plenary session at Olam’s annual cocoa managers conference, Aidoo said climate change and COVID-19 have had a huge impact on the cocoa industry.

Cocoa trees, he said, needed specific weather conditions to enable them to bear healthy cocoa pods, therefore, as soon as the climate balance was disturbed, cocoa cultivation, livelihoods cocoa farmers, as well as the quality of the chocolate were negatively affected.

Olam Cocoa Ghana, one of the largest private licensed purchasing companies (LBCs) in Ghana’s cocoa sector, organized and led discussions with key stakeholders on topical issues affecting the industry during of its annual directors’ conference.

The 2021 edition of the Managers’ Conference was organized under the theme: “Carry out the FY21 exercise in the face of the current dynamics of the industry”.

The week-long program, which opened on September 2, 2021 at the Pentecost Convention Center in Kasoa, brought together some 500 company managers from all of Olam Cocoa’s operational areas.

Industry players and influencers, as well as government officials, led discussions on trends and developments in the cocoa sector and how the company could best position itself favorably.

Olam Ghana Country Manager Mr. Amit Agrawal in a session with staff said: “Olam Ghana has, in a short period of time, created six different companies, all of which are leading in terms of share. Steps.

“Olam is the fifth largest company in Ghana, according to the latest Ghana Club 100 ranking, based on revenue size.”

He said these milestones had been made possible through hard work, good processes and the continued promotion of staff well-being.

Regarding the impact of COVID-19 on the business, Mr Agrawal said that because the business has digitized its operations and already became paperless and cashless before the advent of COVID-19, product sales and the purchase of products had been the least affected by the pandemic. .

Participants took a variety of procurement courses, such as how to meet their FY21 goals with zero delinquencies and how to maximize value.

There were also non-procurement related courses such as financial management, project management, communication and presentation skills to equip employees for the main campaign.

Other activities for participants included a medical screening exercise, sports and an awards ceremony in which employees were recognized for their outstanding performance.

The business leader, Mr. Eric Asare Botwe, said: “Faced with the financial challenges and the impact of COVID 19, Olam International has continued to provide maximum support to Ghana and COCOBOD.

“We are a major purchaser of beans from Cocoa Marketing Company (CMC) through our external business arm as well as for our Olam Cocoa Processing supplies. ”

He praised the team for their hard work and urged the staff to stay the course to maintain Olam’s leadership position in internal marketing.
