Work on the Accra-Nsawam railway line resumed several weeks after its temporary halt due to encroachment activities.

The activities of the intruders, including winners of sand, had compromised the structural integrity of the existing facility, leaving the Ghana Railways Company Limited (GRCL) with no choice but to rebuild new ones.

Arrangements have been made to ship Takoradi railway workers to facilitate the reconstruction work, which should be completed within three weeks.

Minister's visit

Railway Development Minister Joe Ghartey, who visited the railway yesterday to badess the situation, said the railway would be reopened as soon as possible.

He was accompanied by Ms. Comfort Awinya, Traffic Manager at the GRCL office in Takoradi, and Mr. Alfred Selby, Chief Mechanical and Electrical Engineer, and Mr. Yaw Asamoah Monno, Institutional Reforms and Human Resources Specialist. GRCL.

Mr. Ghartey stated that about 200 permanent railway workers, supervisors and engineers were busy repairing the railroad tracks.

"The GRCL officials informed me that the encroachers' activities intensified during the Christmas holidays and damaged sections of the railway.

"The GRCL engineers originally wanted to strengthen sections weakened by the encroachers' activities, but after a number of tests, they decided to rebuild it," he said.

Reopening


Mr Ghartey said that a test would be carried out at the completion of the reconstruction work, after which a definite date for the reopening of the railway would be announced.

He badured that his team was working hard to repair the railroad to solve the transportation problems facing commuters on the Accra-Nsawam line.

At the same time, the minister ordered all intruders on the country's rail lines to retreat in their own interest.
