UEFA will take a strong stand next week against FIFA’s plans to hold a World Cup final every two years.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has expressed his opposition to the biennial finals in a response to a letter from the Football Supporters Europe fan group.
Ceferin said UEFA had “serious reservations and concerns about the information on FIFA plans”.
“Given the major impact this reform can have on the entire football organization, there is widespread astonishment that FIFA appears to be launching a public relations campaign to push its proposal forward when such proposals have not been presented to confederations, national associations, leagues, clubs, players, coaches, clubs and the entire football community, ”the letter said.

Arsène Wenger, FIFA’s World Football Development Manager, is the driving force behind the projects that are expected to be voted on by the 211 national football federations and associations that make up the FIFA Congress.
The world football governing body is currently carrying out a feasibility study on the proposal presented by the Saudi Football Federation.
“In May, 166 member associations voted to carry out a feasibility study on the impact of the FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Women’s World Cup every two years. The process is ongoing and will continue in the coming months with all key stakeholders, including confederations and member associations, ”a FIFA spokesperson said.
“FIFA encourages everyone to share their views in a spirit of positive dialogue. We note with satisfaction the willingness of stakeholders to discuss the international match schedule and other important issues. Fans around the world are consulted on an unprecedented scale and FIFA will publish the results in a timely manner. The aim of the consultation is to conduct a comprehensive analysis taking into account the diverse views and interests of world football.

Many federations are in favor of the proposal because it would increase income and give them more chances to play in the finals. Opponents, including UEFA, European clubs and leagues, are likely to argue that it would be impossible to fit more matches into an already crowded match schedule and harm the well-being of players.
Wenger also wants all qualifying matches for major tournaments to be played in one block in October.
Major women’s tournaments, such as the World Cup and continental events like the European Championship, are currently held in odd-numbered years. The Men’s World Cup and the Euro take place in even years. FIFA’s new vision for football would mean a men’s tournament every year, which would negate the clear goal of the summer to promote the growth of women’s football.
A World Cup would also conflict with the Olympics, unlike now.
