The World Economic Forum's Fourth Industrial Revolution Center today created six councils that provide guidance to address governance gaps in areas such as autonomous driving, precision medicine, blockchain and AI. .
Microsoft President Brad Smith and Dr. Kai-Fu Lee, CEO of Sinovation Ventures and former president of Google China, will co-chair the Global AI Council. Other members of the Global AI Council include Element AI, IEEE, IBM, the Future of Life Institute and ministers from the British, Colombian and United Arab Emirates governments, a WEF spokesperson told VentureBeat in an email.
Cristiano Amon, president of Qualcomm, and Adrian Lovett, CEO of the World Wide Web Foundation, will be part of the IoT Council, while Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, will serve as chairman of the World Council on Urban and Autonomous Mobility.
The six councils met today for the first time in San Francisco to discuss the initial political priorities of the groups, said a spokesman. A complete list of more than 200 members of public and private sector councils from around the world who will participate in global AI councils will be announced in July.
The Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution is based in San Francisco and collaborates with a group of more than 100 partner organizations through offices in China, India, Japan and other parts of the world.
In an interview last month, director Kay Firth-Butterfield informed VentureBeat of the need to set up data boards and advisory boards for companies that manufacture AI. Ongoing initiatives now include a policy of best procurement practices for governments to be considered by UK legislators this summer. The center is also working with the New Zealand government to reinvent the role of regulator in the era of artificial intelligence.
As part of another multinational initiative on AI, last week, 42 countries endorsed the principles and recommendations of the OECD on AI.
