The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has pledged, on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to devote, from 2021 to 2025, 23% of the national budget to the development of education.
The commitment is to help shape the assertive and critical mass of Ghanaian youth for the 21st century.
Speaking at the just concluded two-day World Education Summit in London, United Kingdom (UK), Dr Adutwum said last year that Ghana spent 23% of its GDP to the development of education in the country.
Mountain peak
The two-day summit, co-hosted by the UK government and Kenya in London, took place in person and virtually.
It aimed to raise at least $ 5 billion for the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) to give 175 million children in developing countries the opportunity to study.
With this commitment, the country exceeded the global benchmark of 20 percent.
The announcement means that Ghana will continue to devote the same percentage of its GDP to education sector development by the end of 2025.
Dr Adutwum was speaking at the ‘Financing the Transformation’ session of the World Education Summit, which was themed: Financing the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) 2021-2025, where Heads of State of GPE partner countries discussed the way forward to transform education outcomes.
A centerpiece of the summit was an opportunity for leaders to make a five-year commitment to support GPE’s work to help transform education systems in up to 90 countries and territories.
Commitment
The commitment made by Dr Adutwum on behalf of President Akufo-Addo was in line with the conference goal of each country committing at least 20 percent of its annual budget to support the development of education in their country. .
Dr Adutwum assured the conference of Ghana’s willingness to put in place various measures to improve the development of education for the benefit of the people.
He was optimistic that with the current development and initiatives put in place, there was hope that Ghana’s education would improve massively soon.
