The latest go-home show that preceded Sunday's Extreme Rules card proved to be good – and certainly better than Raw the night before – as SmackDown Live made it Tuesday, thanks to a coup de thumb given to Kevin Owens. character.
The KO beef with Shane McMahon and the way the WWE was run recently have been the perfect book stand for two hours of fun sports entertainment. Was this a sign of how things should change next week under the leadership of Eric Bischoff, recently hired? It is too early to tell. Still, things felt fresh and new that night as WWE continued to change its formula before the blue mark pbaded at the Friday night on Fox next October.

Kevin Owens throws a feud with Shane McMahon
SmackDown started with Owens by interrupting an interview with Dolph Ziggler in the parking lot that sparked a fight. McMahon finally helped to separate the two players before kicking Owens and canceling his match for the main event with Ziggler. Shortly after, Owens came out of the crowd to take a microphone and make a promo on the McMahon family to be a liar. KO told Shane that he was "tired of being a good companion" and asked Shane to spend more time on television and have more power than anyone else on the list. McMahon went out and Owens' microphone was cut twice. By the time McMahon called for security, Owens had retired into the crowd.
Roman Reigns def. Dolph Zigger via pinfall: The high energy match saw Ziggler punch Superman late before Reigns jumped over the top rope to splash the trio of Ziggler, Elias and Drew McIntyre. By the time McMahon entered the ring to distract Reigns, Ziggler was exposing his opponent with a great kick. Owens then came out of the crowd to defeat McMahon with a stunning one before Reigns was released from a zigzag attempt to hit a Ziggler spear and win an exciting victory.
What's the cure for an unyielding quarrel between Reigns and McMahon / McIntyre? In previous weeks, WWE had planned that the addition of The Undertaker would excite his enthusiasm. That's not it. Why not turn Owens into a hybrid between babyface and heel and book it as a cross between Steve Austin and CM Punk? Oh damn, yes. The intensity shown by Owens at the opening of the show with such a sensational promo on McMahon was out of range of the charts. Because of this, the main event has had an additional jolt of legitimacy and hope that KO will come back. He did, and the match was good, which should apparently allow for a transitional feud between Owens and McMahon that will release Reigns for something that counts again. If KO booking in this way is symbolic of the SmackDown product directed by Eric Bischoff, the future is in good hands. Quality: B +
What happened to SmackDown?
- Shinsuke Nakamura def. Finn Balor falling in an untitled match. Nakamura defeated throughout his fight and won a clear victory after a win in Kinshasa.
- Samoa Joe buried Kofi Kingston in the backstage centered on him exposing the WWE champion as a fraudster and manipulator. Joe promised to tear "the last piece of the lie" Sunday, with the title. Kingston later responded with his own promo, claiming that Joe was far from his head.
- Bayley and Nikki Cross have signed contracts for the women's Sunday SmackDown title despite the particular absence of Alexa Bliss. Cross's victory over Raw in the time-beat challenge allowed him to choose the stipulation and meddle in a 2-on-1 handicap match. Bayley worked hard to light Cross on Bliss, using it to make his dirty job. Cross replied that Bayley had no friends (in addition to teasing the return of Sasha Banks), and mentioned that she and Bliss would be co-champions.
- Nikki Cross def. Carmella via pinfall following a rotating choker. Cross glared at Bayley at the edge of the ring during and after the pin.
- Paige and the Kabuki warriors threatened the IIconics that a match between them happens during a behind-the-scenes interaction. Peyton Royce and Billie Kay pretended to be sick for not having to defend their titles on Tuesday night. Paige slapped Kay on the face and made a promo on them to apologize.
- The tag team at the top saw The New Day, Heavy Machinery and SmackDown champions Daniel Bryan and Rowan present their arguments for Sunday's three-threat game. Big E made a pair of hilarious and offbeat badual jokes and Xavier Woods made reference to the story of Rowan, who was taking orders from his team partners, asking, "Who is your father?" Bryan buried New Day as "nothing but a comic act" stuck on the middle card.
- Otis def. Xavier Woods (via pinfall) and Daniel Bryan in a triple threat match. This teaser of the title game Sunday was the opportunity for Otis to show his strength with a double doubled and finish as a result of a powerslam pop-up.
- Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville challenged Ember Moon at a match next week after exchanging words in the line of restoration and told him to choose a partner. Moon agreed and said that she was ready to take them herself if necessary.
- Ali made a promo in a parking lot about the perversity and corruption he witnessed on both sides of the line as a policeman during the night shift. The speech emphasized his integrity while Ali offered his will to face the devil and all kinds of evils for good. "Evil wins only when it does not show up to fight," he added.
- The mysterious opponent of Aleister Black has been revealed During a behind-the-scenes satellite interview, Cesaro sat on an empty chair to explain why he knocked on the door to fight. Black let out a terrifying laugh and added, "All right, Mr. Cesaro, because this Sunday, I'm going to fight you."
- Shelton Benjamin took part in a cryptic interview for the second week in a row, he refused to sell a question about the main event by displaying a confused smile before leaving.
