The former midfielder Barcelona and Spain, Xavi, has been appointed head coach of Qatar's Al Sadd SC club.
The 39-year-old played more than 100 appearances with Al Sadd before retiring at the end of the 2018-19 season, three years after joining the club.
Xavi, winner of the World Cup in 2010, has won eight La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies in Barcelona.
Al Sadd said on Twitter Xavi would replace Jesualdo Ferreira as a manager early next season.
After announcing his retirement, Xavi said he was eager to see "what the future holds for us".
"What I have accomplished in the last two decades has been a privilege," he said.
"Therefore, I believe it's my job to take the initiative on the pitch and come back to football whenever possible."
In a statement published to the Spanish media ASHe added: "My philosophy as a coach reflects the style we have developed for many years under the influence of Johan Cruyff and La Masia, the best representative of football in Barcelona.
"I like to see teams take the initiative on the pitch, attack football and return to the essence of what we all love since our childhood: football with possession."
