HUA HIN, Thailand – Ukrainian player Dayana Yastremska defeated 2-5 in the final round to beat sixth-seeded Australian Alja Tomljanovic, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (3) for his second title at the Thailand Open on Sunday.
Yastremska, ranked 47th, was only two points ahead of the loss of two in the last set, but fought to change the game and won the match in two hours and 22 minutes. It was his second career title after his win in Hong Kong last year.
Yastremska came out of the blocks quickly, finishing the first set in 33 minutes.
In the second, Tomljanovic, with a score equal to two matches, dominated the game with a stronger match while Yastremska was overwhelmed by non-forced mistakes, losing four straight matches to drop the set in 31 minutes.
The Ukrainian player broke to take a 2-0 lead in the deciding set, but then lost the next five games to win 2-5.
Yastremska asked the coach to treat his left leg and reduce his mistakes when the game resumed, reversing four consecutive games to lead 6-5.
In the decisive game, Yastremska was in full charge with deep ground strikes and finally toppled a first on his first point to combine the win.
