The French Minister of the Interior, Christophe Castaner, welcomed on Saturday the return of order in the streets of France after the 19th series of demonstrations of yellow vests (yellow vest). He came out of a meeting with Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and said: "The tougher policies have been effective."

Steps were taken to crack down on violent dissident groups after protesters destroyed shops, cafes and newsstands on the Champs-Elysées on 16 March.

Castaner fired Paris police chief Michel Delpuech for his mediocre management of the operation in the capital and replaced him with Didier Lallement.

As part of the hard line, troops were removed from anti-terrorist patrols to support more than 6,000 police officers in Paris. At the national level, 59,000 additional officers were on duty.

In Paris, the traditional rallying points of protesters in yellow vests – the National Assembly and the neighboring streets of the Champs-Elysées – were banned.

Similar exclusion zones have been established in Toulouse, Bordeaux and Nice.

As a result, the protesters were forced to find other routes for their marches in order to complain about the policy of the government of Emmanuel Macron.

In Paris, a 9 km hike between Denfert-Rochereau in the south and Montmartre in the north was organized and authorized.

It was calm and dozens of marchers mbaded on the grbad just below the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

But as hundreds of people headed to the city center, a group moved away and set fire to the garbage. They also vandalized the entrance to a bank before police tore them off to drive them into adjacent streets.

"We gave people the opportunity to protest," said Castaner. "We arrested the people who came for the violence and the order, as we know it and understand it in the French Republic, has been maintained."

According to officials of the Interior Ministry, nearly 41,000 people took to the streets of France on Saturday. The number was challenged by the yellow vests leaders who claimed that just over 127,000 protesters had rallied.

Castaner said the new policy of prompt identification of troublemakers resulted in 233 arrests and 172 people being held in custody.

He added, "We must remain conscious, determined and vigilant … today, tomorrow and for the coming weeks."
