Yendi missed needed development for years after conflicts derailed their progress
The Cabinet approved a $ 30 million water supply expansion project for the residents of Yendi in the Northern Region.
The Minister of Information who revealed this information said the Akufo-Addo government was pleased with the project because of the municipality's contribution to the agricultural sector.
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah praised Yendi's contributions to large-scale production of food and cash crops and the presence of iron ore deposits in the watershed.
"The supply of drinking water would therefore be a boost to increase production and increase mining potential," he told reporters at a press conference held Thursday.
The development of a new roadmap on the peace process in the region, related to the funerals of Ya-Na Mahamadu Abdulai IV and Ya-Na Yakubu II.
The project is to be funded through a credit facility agreement between the Government and the Indian Exim Bank.
The water supply system of Yendi serves the municipality of Yendi and other surrounding towns and villages. The system takes its raw water from the Daka River through a water treatment facility built in 1961.
However, due to the demographic and economic growth of Yendi Municipality, it has become necessary to expand the existing water supply system to meet the demand of the cities and beneficiary communities.
Explaining the reason for the project, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah explained that "the expansion of the water supply system is also in line with the government's policy to ensure that all people living in Ghana have drinking water by 2030.
"The drinking water supply of more than 133,000 people under the Yendi project would be a giant step toward this goal."
The scope of work for this water supply project will include the construction of a conventional 15,000 m3 / day water treatment plant (3.3MGD) and the construction of 25 km.
The project also includes the construction of a water pumping station as well as the construction of reservoirs and the rehabilitation and extension of distribution networks, over a distance of about 50 km.
According to the Deputy Ofoase Ayirebi, the duration of the expansion of the Yendi water supply project is expected to take 30 months.
"We expect, as a government, that the peaceful air now blowing in Yendi after the success of the road map helps speed up the implementation of this project for the citizens of the region," he said. -he adds.
He added that other development projects are planned in the region and will be announced later.
