Yohanes Amarh Ashitey confirmed as Tema Metropolitan MCE

Mr. Yohanes Amarh Ashitey was elected the new CEO of Tema Metropolitan on Thursday.

This was after he had obtained 28 “yes” votes representing 97% of the 29 members of the Assembly present and voted.

The election was conducted in accordance with the law on local administration which requires the president to nominate a candidate for the post and the candidate must obtain the yes vote of at least two-thirds of the members of the Assembly present and having voted.

Even though the TMA has 31 members of the Assembly, including 21 elected and 10 appointed by the government, two of the members did not show up and one voted no in the elections conducted by the Electoral Commission.

In his inaugural speech, the new MCE thanked President Akufo-Addo and the members of the assembly for the nomination and the confirmation respectively for the confidence shown in him.

For him, this showed that democracy was synonymous with good collaboration, communication and trust.

Mr Quartey said he would ask Mr Ashitey for the content of his acceptance speech, stressing that “you are meant to be the referee, not the player, be very objective and make sure the Assembly is functioning, do not fight anybody for him “.

He urged him to start work by next week and ensure discipline is restored to Tema.

Greater Accra’s regional representative to the Council of State, Mr. Enoch Teye Mensah, Mr. Isaac Ashai Odamtteng, MP for Tema East and former MCE for Tema as well as Mr. Yves Hanson-Nortey, MP for Tema Central all called the support and collaboration of stakeholders for the new ERM while giving it the assurance that they would work closely with it.

Among the dignitaries who graced the confirmation ceremony were Mr. David Anang and Mr. Robert Kempes Ofosuware, who are former MCE of TMA, Mr. Ashong Narh, former MP for Tema East, the leaders of Tema constituency East of the NPP, Reverend Lawrence Tetteh, international evangelist.

Mr. Yohanes Amarh Ashitey is a 43-year-old graduate of the University of East London and a Telecommunications Engineer with 17 years of experience in enterprise engineering in particular mobile and fixed networks.

MCE is also a former Senior Lecturer at Cavendish College, UK, graduating from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Presbyterian Boys SHS-Legon.

With over a decade of frontline political experience, he held several positions in the Tema East constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as election coordinator, technical advisor and sponsor of some party committees during of the 2020 general election.

He was also chairman of the NPP youth wing campaign team for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

As part of his accomplishments, he is credited with improving network uptime from 94% to 99% in his first year as Huawei’s regional manager for the Volta and Eastern regions.

He is said to have empowered some young people in Tema through his education support program which provided scholarships to needy but bright students, as well as created jobs for some unemployed young people.
