Former President John Mahama
Former President John Mahama warned the government not to consider re-deploying masked security men at any election in Ghana.
According to him, any attempt by the Akufo-Addo administration to use the men who were deployed at the Ayawaso by-election in the future will be welcomed with the same measure by the National Democratic Congress of the Opposition.
"And we are sending an opinion: the Deputy Minister of National Security said they were responsible for their deployment. We serve them an opinion: they will never again deploy such force in any election in Ghana. We will resist it. You have never seen armed people flee before. When the power of the people will follow you, you will run. We are for peace, but to enjoy peace you must be vigilant and vigilant. We must defend our democracy.
"It's the philosophy of" all-die-be-die-die "at work. We will not accept "all-die-be-die-die" in this country. And when the chiefs advise, they should advise those who unleash violence, not me, "Mahama noted in the Volta region where he is currently campaigning to lead the NDC in the 2020 polls.
Meanwhile, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice has sunk into chaos that presided over the Ayawaso by-election, calling on the Inspector General of Police to take measures to punish the masked individuals who inflicted chaos on voters.
Electoral violence led to the withdrawal of the main opposition, the NDC, from the polls.
"The Commission has been informed of this development with great consternation in view of the fact that Ghana has experienced peace and stability before, during and after the elections. He is therefore convinced that this situation left unchecked would undermine the hard-won democracy of the nation on the African continent.
"The Commission considers that the security measures taken for this by-election by the Ghana police were inadequate and that heavily armed, masked and hooded security officers were deployed to the La Bawaleshie voting center to harbad, intimidate and shoot Blindly on the electorate harm some during the process as criminal and despicable acts that should not go unpunished, "said the commission in a statement.
