Zimbabwe has purchased 3.5 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine from Chinese companies Sinopharm and Sinovac and the injections are expected to be delivered from July to September, according to Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube.

The 2 million doses of Sinovac and 1.5 million of Sinopharm are expected to help the country’s economic recovery by enabling businesses to operate, Ncube said by telephone on Wednesday.

It will be added to a separate batch of 2 million doses of vaccine that have been purchased from Sinovac and will be delivered this week.

The southern African country has so far received nearly 3 million doses of vaccines, including Sinopharm, Sinovac, Covaxin and Sputnik V.

As of Tuesday, 770,709 people had received a first dose and 544,888 had received a second injection, according to data from the Ministry of Health. The government aims to vaccinate 10 million people out of its population of 15 million to achieve collective immunity.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday announced new restrictions, including a ban on movement between cities, to contain the spread of infections. To date, Zimbabwe has 48,533 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and reported 1,761 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.
