The Association of University Teachers of Ghana has been fighting for a very long time for better conditions of service and a good salary for its members.
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has seen one of its new professors from Zimbabwe reject his appointment due to his low salary.
According to a report filed by StarrNews, a Zimbabwean lecturer turned down a senior lecturer position at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in the Department of Physiotherapy and Sports Science due to his low salary.

Lecturer Dr Matthew Chiwaridzo, who was supposed to be a lecturer in the Department of Physiotherapy and Sports Sciences, said the base salary he is offered here is nothing compared to what he will receive in Zimbabwe .

Unlike KNUST who wanted to pay him USD 760.00 per month, he mentioned that he is paid for the rank of lecturer in Zimbabwe USD 1,500 per month.
“Please note that I am currently in the Lecturer degree (ZWL 1,561,248.00 per year; 1,500 USD per month) at the University of Zimbabwe. It is for this economic reason that I am declining the job offer at KNUST and that I would like to explore other opportunities, ”he said.
His decision comes days after UTAG suspended its strike over poor conditions of service and the government’s failure to resolve long-standing grievances.

The 2012 terms of service set the base and market premium for a speaker at $ 2,084.42, but the government has since failed to implement this condition of service for speakers nationwide.
According to UTAG President Professor Charles Marfo, the current arrangement reduced its members’ base bonuses to $ 997.84.
He added that the entry salary of a lecturer is less than 2,000 Ghc while a professor earns less than 5,000 Ghc per month.
UTAG suspends its strike
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo revealed that the Ghana University Teachers Association has finally called off their strike.
The president told the newly elected leaders of the National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS) that UTAG had agreed to return to class after almost three weeks of absence.
Akufo-Addo added that things had been put in place to resolve the issues and he hoped all parties would adhere to the necessary things.
