Southpaw Alvarez, who turns 32 in May, made his Tigers debut in 2013 and has since pitched for the Angels and Phillies. Alvarez struggled to keep his distance as a Tiger, but he did well in Anaheim and Philadelphia. Overall, despite having a below-par strikeout percentage (20.8), Alvarez recorded a respectable 3.59 ERA / 3.85 SIERA average in 340 2/3 innings in the major leagues. He pitched more than 50 innings in a season four times, although he only pitched 6 1/3 frames last year following a groin injury.
If his deal with San Francisco comes to fruition, Alvarez could be part of a bullpen that has no shortage of lefties. Jake McGee was their relief corps’ largest free agent acquisition, but Jarlin garcia, Sam selman, Wanda Peralta and Caleb Baragar are also on the Giants’ 40-player roster.
