Finally, the NFL draft arrives Thursday night and promises to be a busy evening for the Giants, holders of two choices (# 6 and # 17) in the first round. Here are some preliminary thoughts, with just over six hours until the first round, as it is written:
– It does not seem that the giants are salivating with the idea of negotiating for Josh Rosen. It all depends on the assessment they made of him last year as he was leaving UCLA, plus new information they had gleaned during Rosen's New Year in Arizona.
The Giants had reservations about Rosen's sustainability as an interim candidate because he had shoulder and concussion problems at the university. Rosen was beaten in 2018 – he was sacked 45 times in 14 games – but weathered the storm and was very tenacious. His talent on the arm is considerable and undeniable, but the whole game comes into play with the quarterbacks more than any other position.
Supporters and the media are numerous to support the idea that if the Giants can move Rosen away from the Cardinals – assuming the Cardinals take Kyler Murray with # 1 – for a second-round pick (37th overall) it's a worthwhile case. On many levels, it makes sense. Or maybe the Cardinals realize they can not even pick up a second round pick for Rosen in this year's draft and will settle for less. However that may be, for the Giants to be able to act, they must want Rosen to be on their list and educate themselves behind Eli Manning. At this point, the implementation of this scenario does not seem to be a priority for the giants. If they do not take a quarterback in this draft and Rosen is still available, the Giants may come back and find out from the Cardinals.
– Do not rule out a compromise for giants. General Manager Dave Gettleman does not intend to move from the 37th pick to the 95th pick without having the opportunity to make a selection. This is currently what the draft GIC decree does after they have made their third round choice with the addition of cornerback Sam Beal in last year's extra draft. If the Giants have a group of players grouped on their board in the 17-22 range, an exchange could be in play to acquire an additional choice on Friday night. It would be wild if, instead of having to trade for quarterback Daniel Duke, the Giants could have it by negotiating it.
– The search for a quarterback does not end if the Giants do not take the number 6 or 17. They could take one at the beginning of the second round at No. 37. They could take one at last lap in the third round, at No. 95. Here's the problem: the giants are in no hurry to pick one this year. They believe they have the time to develop any quarter that they might add. They would not bring Manning back if they did not believe that he could win for them in 2019. Beyond that, who knows? So, on Friday, Will Grier or Jarrett Stidham could be a quarterback for the Giants? Or even Clayton Thorson on a Saturday? It is believed that the Giants at the beginning of the evaluation process had liked Ryan Finley, the skinny and accurate quarterback of the state of North Carolina. Could it be a mid-term choice? Giants want to add talent to the position. They could do it in different ways.
– It's no coincidence that the Giants have hired three players who have been with the Cardinals in recent years. The security signatures of Antoine Bethea, linebacker Markus Golden and defensive tackle Olsen Pierre were not made precisely because Giants defense coordinator James Bettcher previously led the Arizona defense. and worked with the three players. His contribution, however, has certainly been a factor. This is one thing to remember when it comes to the repechage, where giants need all kinds of defensive help. Bettcher is highly regarded inside the building and what he thinks of these perspectives, and the way they fit into his scheme, will greatly influence when the time comes to push the button on the pics.
