Giants-Eagles first look: 4 scenarios for Sunday’s game

The New York 2-7 Giants host the Philadelphia Eagles 3-4-1 Sunday at MetLife Stadium. Giants will look to tie the game after the Eagles win the team’s Week 7 game, 22-21

I love the way they fight for each other on Sunday. But I don’t care what the one-year record is. The fact that we’re playing in Philadelphia is a division game, obviously it’s a big game for us.

Playoffs? Really?

It seems utterly ridiculous to even contemplate the playoffs with the Giants at 2-7. Still, if the Giants beat the Eagles on Sunday, they’ll have three wins with six games to go, and no team in the putrid NFC East will have any more.

So whether or not it is, Sunday’s game has playoff implications.

It’s not Washington

The Giants have beaten the Washington soccer team twice this season, five in a row overall and seven of the teams’ last nine meetings. The Giants have now lost to the Eagles eight in a row and the Dallas Cowboys seven in a row.

While the Giants are ever to be taken seriously and one day be able to show hard evidence from the coach of improvement, Joe Judge keeps saying he sees that they are going to have to start beating the Eagles and the Cowboys. Especially in a year when it’s obvious neither of these teams are really good.

Eagles are healthier

Lead driver Miles Sanders and wide receiver Alshon Jeffery are expected to return to training for the Eagles this week. Sanders (kn ee) has only played five games. Jeffery (calf) has yet to play this season.

Turnover

Philadelphia quarterback Carson Wentz and New York quarterback Daniel Jones have often been role models this season not to play the quarterback position. Wentz threw 12 league-leading interceptions and is tied with Jones for the second-biggest fumble by a quarterback (7). He’s lost four, giving him 16 league-leading turnovers. Jones has 9 interceptions and 4 lost fumbles for a total of 13 turnovers.

The quarterback who can play a clean game on Sunday will go a long way in determining who wins the game.

Another test for the Giants’ offensive line

Offensive line coach Marc Colombo this week praised the “huge progress” he believes his squad has made in recent weeks.

The Giants have another big test this week. Football Outsiders ranks the Eagles’ defensive front No. 4 in the NFL against the run and No. 5 in the passer’s rush. Brandon Graham, Josh Sweat, Fletcher Cox, Derek Barnett, Vinny Curry and the rest of the Philadelphia frontline form a group capable of dominating a game.
