Giants end game against Padres with wild double play assisted by Tyler Rogers, top notch call from Duane Kuiper

First, LaMonte Wade Jr. – or “Late Night LaMonte” as he was anointed for his exploits in the ninth inning – gave the San Francisco Giants a 6-5 lead over the San Diego Padres on a single. RBI.

And then something much cooler happened.

At the end of the ninth, the Padres quickly put two men on base. With just one out and the potential winning at home, San Francisco looked to be in serious trouble. But relief pitcher Tyler Rogers managed to lure Manny Machado into a ground ball, at which point the Giants came into action. They nailed the tag at the second, and Rogers – the relief pitcher! – rushed to the first in time to complete a truly exhilarating double play.

The moment of elation was aided, of course, by announcer Duane Kuiper, who delivered a classic call in all caps.

“It’s a ground ball out of Belt,” he began. “They pull out the blow. LAUNCH FIRST … DOUBLE PLAAAY! Rogers went over there to cover the bag, and the ball game is OVER. Unbelievable!”

Kuiper’s excitement is understandable, given the stakes. The Dodgers also won again Tuesday in a 5-4 victory on their own, and remain just one game away from the Giants in the NL West. Whoever wins the division will automatically advance to the NLDS, while the club that comes in second will face a team yet to be determined in the wildcard round.
