Giants’ offensive line strategy sparked best racing day yet

At one point in the first quarter of Sunday’s 23-20 win over Washington at FedEx Field, the Giants had three rookies in the game on their offensive line, by design.

Andrew Thomas, as usual, started on the left tackle. Shane Lemieux started at left guard for the second straight week, replacing Will Hernandez, who is on the reserve / COVID-19 list. Matt Peart, the third-round pick, came in to replace Cam Fleming, a rotation the Giants have used in recent weeks.

The Giants had 109 rushing yards at halftime, which was approved by Hernandez, who tweeted: ‘Hell yeah boys. ”

At one point in the second quarter, the little used Chad Slade entered the game, replacing Lemieux at left guard. In the fourth quarter, Thomas was sitting on the bench and Peart was on the left tackle, a rookie (third round) in place of another (first round).

“In terms of tackling, we’re really three for two here,” said head coach Joe Judge. “In terms of custody, Will should be back as soon as possible for us. I plan to be three for two at these positions also indoors. We’re going to try to play everyone in the game every week, make sure we stay fresh, give everyone experience. ”

The final total: 35 rushing attempts for 166 yards, the two highs of the season.

“They’ve done a great job over the past few weeks,” said quarterback Daniel Jones. [Offensive line] coach [Marc] Colombo spins them and spins them and keeps them cool. We ran the ball efficiently all day. It was a big advantage for us. These guys did a great job up front against a very good defensive front that had the ability to really make an impact on the game and change the game. ”

The Giants’ last five games (two wins, three losses) have been decided by a total of 10 points. … TE Kaden Smith was sent off in the fourth quarter with a concussion. Smith was a big factor in blocking the race before leaving the field.

Rookie WR Austin Mack, replacing veteran home leftist Golden Tate, caught four passes for 72 yards, including a free break for a 50-yard first-quarter completion that established a field goal.

“Austin did a great job stepping up and made a lot of plays for us,” said Jones. “He’s someone you can trust to be in the right place. I certainly trust him a lot. ”

Jones could be heard shouting “Eli, Eli, Eli” as he changed a game at the line of scrimmage, a check that honors retired Eli Manning. Jones laughed when asked about it and said Manning had yet to contact him about it.

“Maybe I’ll hear from him now,” Jones said.
