EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – It was meant to be a party event. Instead, New York Giants owner John Mara was loudly booed in a halftime ceremony for legendary quarterback Eli Manning in a loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. at MetLife Stadium.
The problem was, Mara’s team were losing 17-14. The Giants had come to dominate the first half, but entered the break with what would end up being their third loss in three weeks to open the season.
“I would boo too,” Mara said down the hall to her straight before the start of the third quarter. “We are 0-2 and under half.”
Do that 0-3 for the third time in five years. The Giants lost a lead late in the fourth quarter for the second straight week when Younghoe Koo kicked a 40-yard field goal with no time left.
Giants fans seem to have reached their boiling point. They aren’t happy with the state of the legendary franchise, which has now enjoyed a winning season for the past eight years. This season does not look promising to reverse this trend.
Giants fans even cheered several times on Sunday when beleaguered tight end Evan Engram was taken off the pitch. Their frustration is at this point.
Engram led all tight ends down last season. He fumbled early in Sunday’s loss, but was booed even when he had no chance to catch a pass from quarterback Daniel Jones in the fourth quarter. As he raced towards the sideline after that game as the Giants changed personnel groups, fans applauded his exit.
“Yeah, absolutely. I don’t think it was deserved. It was a knocked down ball. I could have thrown it better at the end. I’m not really sure I understood that,” Jones said. “He played hard the entire game and fought an injury a few weeks ago to come back here. So he’s an important player for us and he’s going to be huge for us down the stretch.”
Engram made two catches for 21 yards in his first game back from a calf injury that forced him to miss the first two weeks of the season.
Fan disgust for Engram, a first-round pick in 2017, has been brewing for some time. It has become the poster child for their discontent. But it was the first real recognition of their distaste for property in a public setting. And it was painfully clear by the volume and clarity of the boos directed at Mara.
Star running back Saquon Barkley then defended the team owner.
“I don’t think it’s fair to Mr. Mara,” Barkley said of the boos directed at the Giants co-owner. “He did a great job.
The Giants are 18-49 in the NFL since the start of the 2017 season. They have made the playoffs once (2016) since Manning and the Giants won their second Super Bowl together in the 2011 season. .
This year once again appears in the wrong direction. The Giants are the only team without a win in the NFC East.
Coach Joe Judge always insists they are going to make a difference. The Giants started 0-5 in his first season as head coach last year. He preached patience to a fan base that currently seems difficult to convince.
“Everything will be fine, guys. OK ? The judge said calmly as he left the stage during his post-match press conference. “We’re going to be fine.”
