There was universal (and unfair) indignation over the Giants' first round pick. And as much as they needed a quarterback of the future, it's a fair point that Duke's Daniel Jones will probably not help the giants this year.
This has been proven by many that Gettleman was lying about his "win now" philosophy. That, they argued, showed that the giants were really a reconstruction team.
But it's hard to say that based on what Gettleman did with the rest of the project.
With the nine other selections he's made in his second project as General Manager of the Giants, Gettleman seemed to be doing exactly what he had promised: getting immediate help, especially for his besieged defense. And here's what he found: A massive anchor in the middle of the defensive line. A starting cornerback, and possibly a starting corner. A deep threat receiver. A special dynamo of the teams. And while his third-round bet against the first Old Dominion player paid off, he also found a dynamic mat.

It's a good job to quickly rebuild the Giants' defense and fill holes throughout the range. He missed a few places, especially along the offensive line. And the jury will no doubt remain on the quarterback until 2020. But he had enough immediate help to make the final note of the Giants' score a B – even if Gettleman would have increased his efforts.
"As far as I am concerned," he said on Saturday, "we had a very difficult weekend. "
No doubt his defensive coordinator, James Bettcher, would agree. It's a lock that the two defensive players that the Giants took in the first round – Clemson's defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and George cornerback Deandre Baker – will be connected directly to the starting formation. And Julian Love, the Notre-Dame cornerback that the Giants got in the fourth round, could rival Sam Beal, extra draft of last year, for a mid-term job in the slot.
These are three solid players and potential beginners in the first four rounds, which is fantastic. Gettleman probably took a little too much risk Oshane Ximines Former Dominion in the third round, because he was desperate for quick help and maybe a little player from this school like this a few years to make the leap into the NFL. But when a team has 10 choices, it can afford some risks, even if it came a little too high.
So Gettleman improved the defense of the Giants. His choice of Washburn cornerback Corey Ballentine in the sixth round could really help their special teams. Enter the Auburn receiver Darius Slayton in the fifth round adds another offensive weapon and a deep threat that the Giants did not really seem to have.
Could they have used a tackle and a bigger receiver? Absolutely. And the players he added are not really instant play modifiers, but a group of solid players with high ceilings that will make the Giants a better team.
No one will care if Jones turns out to be a bust. The truth is that we probably will not know it for a few years. So try not to be obsessed with this choice, at least for the moment. Time will tell if Gettleman was right about him. For the moment, the Giants' defense has received valuable help. And yes, it could really help them win now.
THE GRADES
QB Daniel Jones, Duke (first round, 6th overall) – B-plus
It's unpopular, but the giants have had to get their quarterback of the future, and all the better for them not to wait 17 years because it would have absolutely not been there yet. Jones is a Eli Manning clone that is much better loved by NFL people than, apparently, fans of the Giants.
DT Dexter Lawrence, Clemson (first, 17th) – B
It's a big choice, but not sexy. Placing this weight of 6-4,342 pounds in the middle of the defensive line could have the impact of adding Damon "Snacks" Harrison done a few years ago.
CB Deandre Baker, Georgia (30th) – A-less
Negotiating in the first round was aggressive, but the Giants desperately needed their health in the corner. He was the first CB of the table and many considered it the best covered area of the draft.
LB Oshane Ximines, Old Dominion (95th) – C-plus
It's a bag machine, but it's a terribly big risk considering that it's a little schoolboy and that it's the first to be drafted in ODU. He played well at the Senior Bowl, but can he get by in the NFL?
CB Julian Love, Notre Dame (4th, 108th) – A-minus
Exceptional value this end on a smart corner, fierce ball with 4.54 speeds. At 5-11, 195, it might be more appropriate for the slot. Whatever the case may be, the Giants' corner body is now deep.
LB Ryan Connelly, Wisconsin (fifth, 143rd) – C-plus
A typical Badger linebacker (6-2, 245) who is intelligent, hardworking and plays better than he wants. Good for depth and special teams.
WR Darius Slayton, Auburn (fifth, 171st) – min-less
The Giants needed a larger size in their receiver body, and the Slayton 6-1, 190 pounds is not exactly that. But he is fast – very fast, with a time of 4.39 to 40. He is an extensible ground guy, but if he adds a little muscle there is potential for more.
CB Corey Ballentine, Washburn (Sixth, 180th) – A-less
It's a good place to try his luck in a small school, but his skills and performances at the Senior Bowl show that he might not be very risky. He is small (5-11, 196) but he has a speed of 4.47 and is a demon of the special teams with a talent for blocking kicks.
OL George Asafo-Adjei, Kentucky (seventh, 232nd) – C
Did Gettleman really wait so long to train an offensive lineman? This is a bet that many would have lost. The 6-5 and 315-pound player is more likely to be an uneducated free agent, but a seventh round flyer on him is fine.
DT Chris Slayton, Syracuse (seventh, 245th) – P
He has a good size for the middle of the defensive line (6-4, 307), but his output does not match his abilities at the university. However, his potential is high, so he is a perfect late sleeper and can help special teams and in-depth.
GLOBAL: B
I admire Gettleman for his aggression and for finding a quarterback that he liked that many do not have. Whatever it is, he has plugged a lot of holes with this project. His high school is now much better, his defense is deeper and it was a priority. He takes a big chance on a small school pass in the third round, and it is strange that he took only one offensive lineman (and not before lap 7). But overall, the Giants have received a lot of help.
