CLEVELAND – For sale.
That’s what the Giants want to know about Ryan Santoso, the No.2 kicker, which means there’s no room for him when the final roster cut is over.
And so, they would love to trade him for a draft pick.
The Giants believe Santoso, who was on their training squad in 2020, is one of the 32 best kickers in the world right now, which is why they also believe he may be the spot kicker for a NFL team – but not the Giants, who have veteran Graham Gano been locked up for another three years. Santoso resigned with the Giants because they promised to give him every chance to show his talent and vowed to do everything possible to find him a job opportunity. If they can trade him, great, and the Giants have sent out appeals about Santoso.
In Sunday’s 17-13 loss to the Browns in the preseason, Santoso pulled off his only extra point attempt and managed touchbacks on all three of his kickoffs.
“We wanted to kick Santoso,” said head coach Joe Judge. “This guy had a great camp for us, we wanted to make sure we reward him and get him out to get kicks. We’re happy to have Graham, he’s a phenomenal kicker. If we didn’t have Graham, this guy would be our kicker. I have a lot of confidence in him. ”
Giants owner John Mara chatted with Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr. ahead of the game on the sidelines. Mara, of course, signed the mega-trade for talented but polarizing Beckham, the Giants’ fourth-round pick in 2014.… Remember the post-workout “fight” between Sterling Shepard and Browns CB Troy Hill? Apparently there was no lingering grudge. They kissed after the game.
The judge would not disclose whether there had been any disciplinary action against Shepard; there was probably something minimal.
Second-year safety Xavier McKinney played a series for a specific reason. The coaching staff wanted him to have the opportunity to make the defensive calls, which he can’t do when veteran Logan Ryan is on the pitch. … LB rookie Azeez Ojulari had a “nick” in training last week, Judge said, which is why he was left out of the game. The judge said Ojulari would be ready this week.
OLB Cam Brown continues to excel in special teams. He had two tackles as a gunner on the punt cover team. … Trent Harris, showing positive signs this summer as an outside linebacker, was used in the second half on the inside, as the coaching staff continues to juggle the staff.
CB Sam Beal, trying to stick around – a place on the practice squad is best he could hope for – didn’t have a good performance.
Rookie CB Rodarius Williams was not the only member of his family to start in this game. His younger brother, Greedy Williams, started as a cornerback for the Browns. … CB Jarren Williams was lifted with an injury settlement.
