The Giants signed the southpaw Alex wood to a one-year contract, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. It’s a $ 3M guarantee that includes up to an additional $ 3M in performance bonuses for the ACES customer, for example. Maria Guardado from MLB.com.
Wood, a former Dodger, will now reunite with Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, who was Los Angeles general manager earlier in the southpaw’s career. Wood had some of his best seasons when Zaidi was at the Los Angeles front office, and the 30-year-old has largely held his own since breaking into the majors with the Braves in 2013. Overall, Wood recorded a strong ERA of 3.45 / 3.72. SIERA in an 851 2/3 innings combined, although his fall over the past two years has made him a low buy type this offseason.
LA sent Wood to Cincinnati on a successful contract ahead of the 2019 campaign, and the Reds surely expected him to give them some quality innings that year. However, lingering issues held him back for most of the season and limited him to just 35 2/3 frames from 5.80 ERA.
The Dodgers brought Wood back into free agency almost exactly a year ago (Jan.12, 2020) with a $ 4 million guarantee, but the reunion didn’t go as planned. Wood had shoulder issues in the regular season, during which he pitched 12 2/3 innings and had nine earned runs (mostly out of the bullpen). But Wood bounced back in the Dodgers’ World Series playoff-winning series with 6 2/3 one-run innings and eight strikeouts against three goals. Four of those innings, all scoreless, came in the Fall Classic against Tampa Bay.
In an ideal world for the Giants, Wood will play more like he did in last year’s playoffs than in the regular season. Either way, it’s not that surprising that they put it in the fold. Not only does Wood have ties to Zaidi and manager Gabe Kapler, another former Dodgers front office member, but Giants general manager Scott Harris said earlier this week that the acquisition of a starter from left was a priority for the team.
The giants lost left-handed Drew smyly to the Braves earlier in free agency after serving as a cheap flight for the club in 2020, which temporarily left them with a projected right-loaded rotation. Wood should provide some balance to a starting Giants staff who rely heavily on two former Wood Reds teammates – Kevin gausman and Anthony DeSclafani – as good as Johnny Cueto and Logan webb.
