Following very public examples of two of their dramatically failing power suppliesGigabyte offered replacements for anyone involved, while questioning the methodology used by those who raised the issue in the first place.
In a statement published on the company’s website, Gigabyte gives an explanation of what is happening – two power supply models, the GP-P850GM and the GP-P750GM, were found dead on arrival or fired to death – saying “sometimes there may be cases where the maximum power may exceed the intended range of use ”.
The company then goes directly address the Gamer Nexus video from last week who so publicly highlighted the problem in the first place, apparently accusing them of putting the units under so much pressure:
GIGABYTE appreciates and takes into consideration all comments and suggestions from our media partners and hardware professionals. We have received concerns from third parties about potential issues with tripping the GP-P850GM and GP-P750GM at high power levels when tested through DC electronic load equipment for extended periods of time repeatedly near the OPP trigger point of 120 to 150%. This extended level of testing could dramatically shorten the life of the product and components of the GP-P850GM and GP-P750GM.
However, this is not what happened! the Gamer Nexus the video showed that the units sometimes arrived dead in the box before even being used, or died after only a few minutes of use, and not the “lengths of time” claimed by Gigabyte.
Which might explain why, despite this, and repeated assurances that all of their power supplies have been certified for safety, Gigabyte also points out that these models have since undergone modifications, and that anyone who bought one of the units concerned can have them exchangedusers are encouraged to contact their local Gigabyte customer service center.
