Tina Louise, now the last surviving star of the beloved 1960s television series “Gilligan’s Island,” paid tribute to her late co-star Dawn Wells on Wednesday.
“I will always remember Dawn’s kindness to me. We shared the creation of a cultural monument that has continued to bring comfort and smiles to people during this difficult time, ”said a tweet on the 86-year-old star’s official Twitter account. “I hope people remember her as I do – always with a smile on her face.
Louise played redhead “movie star” Ginger Grant on the CBS sitcom. She was glamorous tinsel to charming girl next door Mary Ann Summers of Wells on the unexplored desert island, where they were stranded along with other patrons on the infamous ‘three hour tour’. Wells died of complications from COVID-19 on Wednesday. She was 82 years old.
Speaking to the New York Post, Louise described her co-star as a “very wonderful person”.
“Nothing is more important than family and it was family. She will always be remembered, ”said Louise.
“Gilligan’s Island” played Bob Denver as the main character, Alan Hale Jr. (the Skipper), Jim Backus (the Millionaire), Natalie Schafer (his wife), Russell Johnson (the Professor), Wells and Louise. The set-up comedy was vilified by television critics and only aired from 1964 to 1967. Yet it survived and became a cult following syndication for years afterward.
“I only spent three years doing it,” Louise told The Times in 1992. The show was so successful, she added, because “everyone played their part well. Everyone wants to be on a desert island. It covers everyone’s fantasy because there is someone for everyone.
