New York Yankees shortstop Gio Urshela stayed in the game in Sunday’s regular season final against the Tampa Bay Rays after making a sensational catch to end the start of the sixth inning. Urshela chased an Austin Meadows pop-up just outside the Rays dugout in a game with playoff implications for the Bronx Bombers.
The Yankees then won 1-0 on a ninth inning single from Aaron Judge, earning them a spot in Tuesday’s American League Wild Card Game against the Boston Red Sox. Urshela got fucked hard by the game, but he thinks he can adapt to the game, according to comments he made after Sunday’s victory.
On the game in question, Urshela’s momentum took him to the dugout after securing the ball, however, and the Rays quickly waved for a Yankees coach. Urshela got out of the canoe on his own a few minutes later, but he appeared to be limping. Here’s a look at the play in all its cinematic glory:
Urshela came in on Sunday hitting .269 / .303 / .422 (97 OPS +) with 14 home runs and a stolen base. Based on Baseball Reference’s calculations, he was worth 0.9 wins over substitution in his first 439 trips to home plate. Although he’s a third baseman by trade, he’s mainly played shortstop since mid-September to create space for DJ LeMahieu on third and Gleyber Torres on second.
It should be noted that the Yankees placed LeMahieu on the injured list on Sunday due to a sports hernia. The Yankees are also without Miguel Andújar, who has been on the injured list with a wrist injury since June, leaving them precious depth on the left side of the infield. For now, anyway, it doesn’t look like Urshela will miss a moment and force the Yankees to dig even deeper into their contingency plans.
