KANSAS CITY, MB (AP) – A Kansas City Zoo official announced that an adult giraffe had died of a spinal injury in a barn.

The zoo announced that Wednesday, a 9-year-old man named Hamisi, had taken his head in an area of the barn allowing guards to reach the animals. Officials believe that Hamisi panicked and damaged his spine.

The Kansas City Star reports that Hamisi spawned two giraffes last year. He came to Kansas City from the Disney Animal Kingdom in 2016.

Sean Putney, senior director of the zoo's operations, explains that the barn was built in 1995. He stated that no animals had been injured before in the barn.

The remaining giraffes of the zoo are housed in a separate area of the giraffe barn which does not have the same configuration as that of Hamisi.
