A 16-year-old girl died and a teenager was injured after falling into an icy lake in Ohio, officials said. Jason Lagore, a police officer with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources who answered the call from Rocky Fork State Park in Hillsboro, also died after suffering a medical emergency, authorities said.
Lagore fell ill shortly after responding to the incident, which was reported around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Authorities said this happened at a private dock on a steep slope on the north side of Rocky Fork Lake in Highland County’s 2,080-acre park.
The 13-year-old boy tried unsuccessfully to locate the girl before breaking free from the ice and water, authorities said. The boy was taken to hospital for treatment for hypothermia, but further details about his condition have not been released.
It took more than four hours before emergency crews found the girl, who had been trapped under the ice, officials said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not released the names of the teens or indicated whether they are related.
Lagore, a married father and two young sons, was a 15-year force veteran and was responsible for his first dog training academy, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources said on Facebook.
“Please keep Officer Lagore and his family in your prayers,” the department said.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine ordered flags to fly at mid-range in public buildings in Highland County and others in Columbus to honor Lagore.
The Highland County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio Natural Resources Division were investigating the incident.
In a similar incident, two men were rescued after falling through the ice in Tipp City around 10 a.m. on Wednesday. The men remained in the water for at least 15 minutes before rescuers brought them to safety, authorities said.
Both men were taken to hospital, but their names and other details of their conditions were not immediately released. No other injuries were reported during the incident.
