The incident happened on Tuesday evening just west of Mount Cristo Rey, where a border patrol camera operator spotted the smugglers using infrared camera technology. The video was released Wednesday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
According to the agency, one of the suspects dropped the Ecuadorian children, aged 3 and 5, then the two smugglers fled the scene on foot and “abandoned the helpless little girls on the north side of the international border”.
The cameraman warned the other officers and directed them to the remote location, where they found the younger sisters and provided them with assistance. The two girls were alert when officers located them, officials said.
The children were transported to the border patrol station in Santa Teresa for assessment and then to hospital as a precaution. They were medically cleared and remained in the agency’s custody temporarily, pending placement by the Department of Health and Social Services.

“I am appalled at how these smugglers viciously dumped innocent children from a 14 foot border fence last night. Without the vigilance of our agents using mobile technology, these two tender aged siblings would have been exposed to the harsh elements of the desert environment for hours, “said Chief Patrol Officer Gloria I. Chavez of the El Paso Sector of the Border Patrol.” We are currently working with our law enforcement partners in Mexico and try to identify these ruthless smugglers in order to hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law. “
