A new public transcript of a conversation from February 2018 shows Rudy Giuliani telling federal agents it was okay to lie during presidential campaigns.
The transcript, obtained by the Washington Post, showed a conversation between Giuliani and agents of the Inspector General of the Department of Justice.
The conversation took place in a room at Donald Trump’s hotel in Washington, DC. It aimed to find out whether FBI agents leaked sensitive information to Giuliani during the 2016 election, as he suggested during media appearances at the time. Giuliani voluntarily participated in the interview, The Post reported.
The transcript also showed Marc Mukasey, Giuliani’s associate attorney at the time, telling the officers, “I’m not necessarily saying Rudy, but everyone beautifies everything.”
Giuliani then said, according to the transcript, “Oh, you could throw a scythe.”
To which Mukasey said: “You don’t have to tell the truth,” according to the text.
The Post obtained the transcript after a government watchdog, Project on Government Oversight, sued for a copy and turned it over to the newspaper.
Mukasey declined to comment on the Post. A lawyer for Giuliani did not respond to the Post’s request.
Giuliani is being sued by Dominion Voting Systems, which said he made defamatory allegations about the company’s role in the 2020 election by promoting false electoral conspiracy theories.
Giuliani also faces a host of other legal issues, including the temporary suspension of his lawyer’s license in New York and Washington, DC, due to his lies about the 2020 election.
