It’s been years since I played Minecraft regularly, but I still really enjoy it when new features and creatures start to appear in the game. Without fail, it means that always creative Minecraft players will find unexpected ways to use them. The latest Minecraft snapshot adds other parts of the upcoming Caves & Cliffs update, including the cute squids and their glowing ink.
Mojang’s patch notes for snapshot 21w03A explain what’s possible with the New Shiny Squids and their ink. They’re supposed to live in dark, deep caves, but Mojang says they won’t naturally spawn in this snapshot. For now, you’ll need to create a creative world and use spawn eggs to summon them.
Naturally I found a small dark pond and slapped a whole handful of them and they are quite pretty. They even make a soft little ringing sound while floating.
The shiny new squids aren’t all that shine in the new update, either. Glowing Lichen has also been added, a vegetable light source that can be found and harvested with shears inside caves.
If you kill a Glow Squid, it will drop sacks of glistening ink that can be used to make text visible from a distance on signs. Apparently, it can even be colored for an added touch. I’m already interested in seeing the brilliant displays players come up with.
As always, Mojang is leading its Caves & Cliffs update by incorporating new additions into snapshots that players can try out ahead of time. So far in other snapshots, they’ve added copper and amethyst blocks along with those axolotls that everyone is so excited about. Be careful, axolotls will attack glowing squids, so make sure you don’t leave them lying around.
If you want to meet the squids yourself, you’ll want to load up the Minecraft launcher and choose ‘last snapshot’ from your facilities tab. It should be labeled 21w03A.
