GM announced today that it will unveil the full “Silverado E” at CES 2022 on January 5 in Las Vegas, where CEO Mary Barra will deliver the keynote address. But they gave us some information in a live question-and-answer session earlier today …
Barra and President Mark Reuss spoke at length this morning about the upcoming electric vans. With much boast, they announced that GM was planning to be a leader in electric vehicles.
Reuss touted the Silverado’s 24-inch tires and wheels that feature the same 4-wheel steering and theoretical crabbing ability as the Hummer.
GM also took a long time to tout the Silverado’s glass roof. Glass roofs have proven popular in Rivian R1T and Tesla Cybertruck reveals.
The brand also confirmed that the Silverado electric pickup will feature a
Segment-leading fixed glass roof for commercial models, offering extended visibility,
increased headroom and improved space experience for the front and
rear passengers. This is the first application of a fixed glass roof available on a GM
pick-up in the full-size truck segment.

What caught my attention was the vehicle’s short hood compared to the current Silverado. Maybe it’s just the art department and not a new design.
Designed like an EV from scratch, the Silverado EV harnesses the best of
Silverado Ultium Platform and Proven Capability. The fleet and retail versions of the
Silverado Electric will offer customers a variety of options and is expected to be on high
demand. In addition to the fixed glass roof, Chevrolet has confirmed the availability of
Four Wheel Steer A feature of the chassis that allows the vehicle to steer all four wheels.

Reuss said Silverado E and Sierra E customers have a very different profile than current Silverado and Sierra owners, and there will be many more opportunities to sell products and services to those owners.
Reuss and Barra listed the opportunities for GM:
- Ultracruise (coming in 2023): UltraCruise will cover 95% of driving situations
- Insurance: GM plans to disrupt the insurance industry (if Tesla and Rivian haven’t already)
- Division of the BrightDrop fleet, which could theoretically also use some of these Silverados
- GM Defense: selling electric pick-ups to the military?
- Software platform: assuming fleet management will be important here and crossed with Bright Drop
- GM embarks on locomotives (yes, trains!) And electric and fuel cell options
- Fuel cell transmissions for internal and external applications – Nikola lol
- Their Ultium agreement with Honda: could theoretically also turn into a truck partnership (Honda Ridgeline E?)
In a vacuum, it looks like a solid line of product and service plans based on the Ultium and the electric pickup platform.
Taking Electek
Sometimes it’s hard to imagine the world GM lives in. Its big EV projects are still in the distant future, but the EV transition is happening now, and it’s already late for the party. GM says it plans to be the leader in the electric vehicle space while currently buying more EVs than they sell (negative market share !?). Meanwhile, Tesla is almost doubling year over year, and competitors like Rivian are currently making products, not to mention the rollout of Ford’s F-150 Lightning and Blue Oval City plans.
It’s almost 2022, and if you go to a GM dealership today, there aren’t exactly any EVs for sale.
Having said that, I have been Great impressed with my limited possibilities to use SuperCruise, and besides the battery i really loved my Chevy Bolt EV more than it looks in detroit. I’m disappointed Electrek hasn’t had a chance to drive the HummerEV or Cadillac Lyriq since GM’s pre-pandemic EV Day prototype preview.
I know GM engineers can create great electric vehicles and software for autonomous vehicles. GM has the scale to do a lot. If he can get his relationship with LG out of the dumpster fire, he can theoretically pull it all together.
But GM is literally starting over from scratch right now, and with Lordstown’s mismanagement, the Nikola partnership due diligence, and the Bolt battery fiasco, I’m not sure I’m putting my money back on GM.
